About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

Wenn twei Frugens sick drapen,
ward dei Drüdd’ in dei Häkel nahmen.

Sei hett mi seggt,
du harst ehr dat seggt,
wovon ick di seggen dauh,
du süst ehr nicks seggen.

Ick heff ehr doch seggt,
sei süll di nicks seggen,
dat ick ehr dat seggt heff.

Ick heff ehr verspraken,
di nicks tau seggen,
dat sei mi seggt hett,
dat du ehr dat seggt harst;

also segg ehr nich,
dat ick di seggt heff,
dat sei mi dat seggt hett.

So, nu weit’st Bescheid.

Wenn two women meet
the third will be raked over the coals.

She told me
you told her
what I told you
not to tell her.

You see? I told her
she shouldn’t tell you
that I had told her.

I promised her
not to tell you
that she had told me
you had told her.

So don’t you go tell her
that I’ve told you
she had told me!

So there you have it.
