About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

Language information: Eastern Friesland Low Saxon is one of the varieties of the Low Saxon language, spoken in the German region Eastern Friesland (Ostfriesland). It is one of the dialect groups with Frisian substrates (like Low Saxon of Stellingwerf and Groningen). The town of Hinte is located near the border between Eastern Friesland (and thus Lower Saxony) on the German side and the province of Groningen on the Netherlands side. [Click for more.]

De Knüt

De Knüt har sien Nüst in’t Schkür. Eenmal wassen de Ollen beid’ utflogen. Se wull’n wat halen, um de Jungen to futtern, un se harrn de Lüttjen heel alleen laten.

Kört Tied later kwamm de Vader weer.

„Wat is hier passeert?“ frog he. „Well hett jau wat dan, Kinner? Ji sünd ja heel verdattert!“

„Och Vader,“ sähn se, „hier kwamm nett een grode Busabella vörbi. De sach heel düll un schrickelt ut! He kek mit sien groot Oogen in uns Nüst rin. Dorvan hem wi’ uns verfehrt.“

„Oha,“ se de Oll, „wor is he den bleven?“

„Ja,“ sähn se, „he is dor langs gaan.“

„Wacht,“ se de Oll. „De will ick na. Bedoort jau Kinner, de will ick kriegen.“ Dann flatter he achteran.

As he um de Hook kwamm, was dat en Löw, de dor langs gung.

De Knüt harr keen Angst. He sett sük up de Rügg van de Löw un fung düchtig an to schkell’n. „Wat hest du bi mien Huus to söken,“ see he, „un mien lütje Kinner to verfehren?“

De Löw kümmer sük gor neet un gun’ sien Weg.

Dau schkull he noch mehr, de lüttje driest Kerl. „Gornix hest du dor to söken segg ick die! Un wenn du weer kummst,“ se he, „dann kannst du wat belewen! Ick wull dat ja eegentlich neet daun,“ se he un till een van sien lüttje Beenen an, „aber ick kann die’d Rügg mit disse Been tomal breken!“

Dornah flatter he weer to sien Nüst torüch.

„So Kinner,“ se he, „de heb ick mien Meenen seggt. De kummt noit weer!“
