About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

An Dreòlan

Uair dhen t-saoghal, bha nead aig an dreòlan anns a’ gharaid. Là bha seo, bha an dà pharant air a dhol amach – bha iad airson rudeigin ri ithe fhaighinn dhan na h-òigridh – agus dh’fhàg iad an fheadhainn bheaga leotha-fhèin.

An deaghaidh greis, thill an t-athair dhachaigh.

“Dè dh’èirich an seo?” ars esan. “Cò bheudaich sibh, a’ phàisdean? Tha sibh uile fo gheilt.”

“O, athair”, thuirt iad, “Thàinig bòcan air choireigin seachad an dràsta. Bha coltas cho fiadhaich is cho fuathmhor air! Bheachdnaich e a staigh air an nead againn le shùilean mòra. Chuir sin eagal cho mòr oirnn.”

“Tha mi ‘tuigsinn” ars an t-athair, “Càit an deachaidh e?”

“Uell” ars iadsan, “Ghabh e sios a’ rathad sin.”

“Fuirich sibhse” ars an t-athair, “Beiridh mise air. Na bi fo chùram a’ nis, a’ chloinn. Gheibh mis’ e. Agus thòisich e air itealaich an tòir air.”

Thàinig e mun cuairt air lùb sa’ rathatd is chunnaic e gur e an leòmhann a bha ann, a’ stràidearachd ann a’ sin.

Ach cha robh eagal sam bith air an dreòlan. Theirinn e sios air druim an leòmhainn agus thòisich e air sglàmhradh air. “Dè an gnothach a th’agadsa, a’ tighinn dhan taigh agamsa” ars esan “Agus a’ cur eagal a’ bhàis air na pàisdean agam?”

Cha do dh’aithnich an leòmhann idir e agus chum e roimhe, a’ coiseachd.

Thug sin air a’ bhlaomair a bhùiteachadh na bu bhuirpe. “Chan eil gnothach idir agad a bhith ann a’ sin, tha mi ’g innse dhut! Agus ma thilleas tu air ais” ars esan, “Well, chì thu dè a dh’èiricheas. Chan eil mi, an da-rìreadh ag iarraidh a dheanamh” ars esan agus e a’ togail tè dha na casan aige “Ach bristidh mi do dhruim le mo chois ann an dìog!”

Leis a’ sin dh’itealaich e air ais dhan nead aige. “Sin sibh, a’ phàisdean” ars esan, “Dh’ionnsaich mi leasan dhan fhear sin. Chan till e air ais.”
