About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

’t Tuynekruypertjen

„Ach, va,” segen se, „der kwam hyr net so ’n grote buman voerby. Hiy sag der so hellig en eng uyt! Hiy keek mit syn grote ogen in ons nes. Dat hev ons so bange emaek!”

„So,” seeg de vaar, „Waar is e hinne egaan?”

„Nuun,” segen se, „hiy güng dee kante uyt.”

Stille mar, kynders! Ik grype hüm we’ in de kladden.”

Dan vlyg e der achter an.

As e de huuk ümme kümp, loop daar een leeu.

Mar ’t tuynekruypertjen is neet bange.

„So, kynders,” seeg e, „dat he’ ’k hüm we’ of-eleerd. Dee kümp hyr neet weer.”
