About the story
What’s with this “Wren” thing?
The oldest extant version of the fable we are presenting here appeared in 1913 in the first volume of a two-volume anthology of Low Saxon folktales (Plattdeutsche Volksmärchen “Low German Folktales”) collected by Wilhelm Wisser (1843–1935). Read more ...

Help

The sound files presented on this website are brought to you in the popular mp3 format, which makes it possible to compress audio samples to an acceptable file size. Even so, some older computers or computers with slow internet access may need some time to download these files.

When opening a language page, you will immediately see if there’s a sound file available for that language. (In some cases there are more than one.) If so, you can either choose to listen to the sound file within the browser (using the “Play” button on the sound bar), or you can download the mp3 file directly onto your computer (using the “Download mp3” link).

Please consider helping us!

You can do so by providing further translations. (Click here for more information on that.)

Alternatively, or in addition, you might want to provide a sound recording that goes with any of the available written versions. We welcome more than one recording for the same version. Use any of the common sound file formats. (We prefer Wave and MP3 though.) You do not know how to do that? You would prefer to do the low-tech thing and send a cassette tape instead? Sure! Contact us, and we can make arrangements:

sassisch@yahoo.com
or
lowlands.list@gmail.com

Please write to us before sending very large files. This way we are warned, and perhaps we can work out a way of transmission without risking e-mail problems. (If the file you try to send is larger than 1 MB it’s too large. Someone tried to send a 12MB file, and that cause all manner of problems!) In order to assure that your mailing does not end up rejected by the SPAM filter, please make sure “LL-L” or “Lowlands-L” is somewhere in the subject line.

As soon as we can manage we will post some simple recording instructions here.

Thanks in anticipation!
