Evening Peace
Abendfreden
Ein niederdeutsches Gedicht · A Low Saxon (Low German) Poem
Klaus Groth, Quickborn, 1856 · English:
Reinhard F. Hahn
The
world is calm, like sleeping
In peaceful reverie.
You hear no laughs, no weeping.
It’s silent like a tree. |
Just
in the leaves it’s ringing,
Like a child’s talk in its sleep,
Like lullabies for singing
To sleep the cows and sheep. |
Night’s
darkness is surrounding
The village beyond the fog.
Like human talk are sounding
The voices from the bog. |
You
hear the cattle grazing
At pasture without care.
Before my feet—amazing!—
Sleeps even a timid hare. |
Heavenly
peace is allaying
All discord. There’s just sacred love.
This is a time for praying.
Hear me, o God above! |
