 ost children used to amuse themselves with games that
required no toys, or games that required no more than found objects,
such as sticks and stones. Communal play requires rules, and it requires
ways of assigning roles and turns. This is where counting rhymes and
other types of rhythmic play ditties come in. There is a great wealth
of those.
But most of them are at the verge of extinction in our age of hi-tech
pastime. For the sake of future generations it behooves us to preserve
descriptions of the ones we still know. The same goes for lullabies
and nursery rhymes, also for ditties that go with simple play activities
for very young children.
