rofessional specialization enabled technology to advance more rapidly, and this
allowed arts and crafts to be developed by leaps
and
bounds. Long before that, people had striven to
not only create useful things but also to make them look as pleasing
as possible. They did much of this during the dark, cold winter months
when less work was to be done outside. Following ethnic and place-specific
pattern traditions, housing and clothing was
given loving,
beautifying
touches. To attract good suitors, special
efforts were put into unmarried women’s attire, culminating in elaborate
bridal finery. Much
time and effort tended to be spent on decorating religious
places.
Paintings and sculptures conveyed
teachings in predominantly illiterate societies.
Since small communities could not afford to hire famous
artists,
it
is in their
surviving churches
that we find traditional art or rustic emulations of professional
art.
