Optimizing the display of these pages
This is a test.
Düt is ’n Test.
[dʏt ʔɪsn̩̊ 'tɛst]

Your display is set up fine if what you see above resembles what you see below.

If not, please install at least one of the appropriate fonts mentioned on this page.

If you wish to be able to read all the text including phonetic notations, please make sure that your computer has at least one of the following Unicode fonts installed, listed here in the order of preference:

    1. Arial Unicode MS
    2. DejaVu Serif
    3. Cardo
    4. Charis SIL
    5. Code2000

First please take a look at the test box on the right. Does your setup pass the test? If it does, you do’nt need to worry about this any further, unless you don’t like the look of the font to which the display defaults on your computer and you want to install one that is higher up on the priority list above.

How do you know what fonts are installed on your computer? There is more than one way to find out. Perhaps the quickest way (and for most beginners the least intimidating one) is to check in your word-processing program (e.g. Abiword, KWord, LyX, Microsoft Word, OpenOffice.org Writer, or WordPerfect): simply go to the font choice menu (usually a drop-down menu in the tool bar) to see if any of the mentioned fonts are listed there. If none of them is available you have to obtain and install at least one of them.

    1. Arial Unicode MS (comes with Microsoft Windows and with other programs)
    2. DejaVu Serif: sourceforge.net/projects/dejavu
    3. Cardo: scholarsfonts.net/cardofnt.html
    4. Charis SIL: tinyurl.com/yjzbjc
    5. Code2000: www.code2000.net/code2000_page.htm

This is how you install fonts:

Windows 95/98/Me, Windows 2000/XP and later

  • If the downloaded font is zipped (i.e. condensed in size), using an unzip utility, extract the font and manual to a location that you can find later. (It doesn’t matter where. Putting it on the desktop is easiest, but it can go in any folder you like).

  • Activate the Start button on the taskbar.

  • Choose Settings/Control Panel. A window will open.

  • If you can see the name of the font file, simply drag it onto the Fonts icon and it will be automatically installed

If you cannot see the required font file, then …

  • Double-click on the Fonts icon in Control Panel, and a new window will open.

  • Choose File/Install New Font.

  • In the dialog box that appears, navigate to the drive and directory where you extracted the font. Windows will search for font names.

  • Double-click on the name of the font.

  • Close the Font window.

Mac OS X

  • If the downloaded font is zipped (i.e. condensed in size), using an unzip utility (such as StuffIt), extract the font and manual to a location that you can find later. (It doesn’t matter where. Putting it on the desktop is easiest, but it can go in any folder you like.)

  • Open the hard disk where your copy of OS X is stored.

  • Open the Library folder.

  • Drag the font icon from the desktop (or wherever you put it) onto the Fonts folder icon in the Library.
