Clara Kramer-Freudenthal was born on November 3, 1919, in Olland (Dat Ole Land, Altes Land), a rural, mostly fruit-growing area situated in two German states: Lower Saxony and Hamburg. Although since then she has lived in other parts of Northern Germany, her roots remain firmly planted in her native soil, and her language remains that of her native community: the Olland dialect, one of the Lower Elbe dialects of the Low Saxon (Low German) language.
Ms. Kramer-Freudenthal is perfectly bilingual in Low Saxon and (High) German. She has been spending much time and effort on helping her native language survive and to record as much of it as possible. Now a member of the Association of German writers, Ms. Kramer-Freudenthal began publishing newspaper columns, short stories, poems and a book, Ollanner Vertelln, when she was already well into her seventies. In the process she became proficient in computer work and connected via e-mail with people who share her interests. Some of her writings have been passed along in the original, in transliteration and in English translation to the subscribers of the e-mail discussion group Lowlands-L. These works are being made available on these pages in the hope that people anywhere in the world will enjoy them, learn from them and in the process will learn something about Low Saxon, a West Germanic language that is the direct descendent of Old Saxon and is now an endangered minority language in Northern Germany and the Eastern Netherlands.
