Uns Vogels in Goorn singt, as wüür de Lenzmoond al dor. Bet herto is de smucke Buntspecht ümmer alleen koom to'n Freten, ober hüüt harr he sien Fro ok dorbi. Warrt veel Untüüch an Blattlüüs un Snicken usw. geben wenn nich noch good teihn Doog Duurfrost so üm teihn bet föffteihn Grood in de Ierd goht.

Is It Ever Going to Be Winter? by Clara Kramer-Freudenthal Apparently this has been the warmest January since 1903. Nature has gone crazy! Tonight, on Channel 3, there was an in-depth documentary about this winter that is no winter at all. Professor Klaus Hasselmann of the Max Planck Institute, Hamburg, explained that, globally speaking, the temperature range is one degree higher than at the turn of the century and is gradually rising. What is happening to us here is that the gulf stream has been warming up and has been changing our climate. And what is the reason for that? ,,Greenhouse effect'' is what the monster is called. Glaciers and icebergs are continuously breaking up in the Arctic and in the Antarctic. The level of our North Sea has been rising farther and farther. And this is not limited to the North Sea; no, it is rising everywhere. What is it we ought to consider doing at this point? The dikes have got to be raised! After all, "Shiny John" [= the spirit of the stormy North Sea] shows up whenever he feels like it. He is merely asleep, is taking a deep breath ready to blow it into the North Sea. In Wienhusen/Weinhausen near Celle, the first storks have returned from Africa. Surely they are going to get cold feet. Humans have got to help them. We must protect the few storks we have left. The animals won't find any frogs yet, but perhaps they have [re]appeared already. Just like the little hedgehogs that don't find anything [to eat and drink] either. We need to put out food and drinking water [for them]. They love eating canned cat food and also a little vegetable matter with it. Our birds in the garden have been singing as if March had arrived already. So far the pretty flicker has been coming to feed alone, but he is being accompanied by his wife today. Might spring be in their blood already? We humans too have to struggle in this type of unhealthy weather. You tend to get sick when your immune system and your blood circulation are ruined in this crazy kind of weather. They also call this type of weather "internists' weather," because doctors' offices are crowded then. Also the bees are all mixed up and have been swarming, but they found nothing to eat and have been starving to death. In Olland [Altes Land], the fruit growers have been pruning the fruit trees, and they have been horrified to find that the trees ["stand fully in sap" =] have come to full life and have been bringing forth buds. This could lead to disaster, because we are bound to still get some frost; this is as sure as "Amen" in church. It would be nice if Mother Holle and the Golden Girl gave the bedding another quick shake. Ten centimeters or so of snow would suffice to cover up and protect all the early bloomers that are curiously sticking their heads out of the ground already, so they will delight us at the proper time. A clump of broom is already in bloom on Friedrichsgober Way, its bright yellow being noticeable from afar. If there isn't going to be another ten days or more of continuous frost entering the ground at about ten to fifteen degrees, then there will be a lot of vermin, such as aphids, snails and slugs. As the farmer says, "Spring will be very late if there is frost between January 30 and February 3." |
