Low Saxon has three genders: masculine, feminine and neuter. A noun, including a noun denoting an inanimate object, can have masculine or feminine genders. Gender assignment may differ between dialects.

Diminutive forms of nouns are neuter, irrespective of their original form; e.g., Uul 'owl' (feminine) > Uulken 'little owl', 'owlet', 'night moth' (neuter).
